That sounds great. I'd love to do that but it would be hard for me to set down a routine or structure for
learning.
I wish there were school geared especially for special needs kids to meet all their needs and get rid of all
the bureauacy of the school system.
That would be a dream come true for alot of us.

Hi,

I'm considering homeschooling my grandson. He has PDD-NOS (on the Autism Spectrum) and hypotonia. There's several reasons why I want to homeschool him, but hyponia is one. His hypotonia is very mild, but he complains he is always tired at school, it wears him out. For this reason, he says, he doesn't like school. It would be easier for him to be able to rest, when he needs it, at home. I'm going to get him into swimming to increase his endurance. He was in it last year and I noticed he felt a lot better. On another note. I talked with my daughter about homeschooling. She's concerned that he won't be around children enough. I've talked with other homeschoolers that say they have had to cut down on their kids socializing, because they have too many opportunities. I've checked some of the internet sites out for homeschooling groups and there are a couple in this area that look promising.I don't see a huge network in miami/hollywood areas.Down south looks much more built up. I wonder, myself, how easy it would be to create a social network for my grandson in the N miami area. If it weren't for that unkown, I'd do it without an any reservation.

Hello,

How wonderful to see grandmothers involved and advocating for their grandchildren. There are alot of things to consider prior to making any big decision. First, go to the school choice website so you can research the statutes which is basically the law regarding home education.http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/
If you can comply with the law, then I suggest that step two be locating a local support group which offers socialization as well as enrichment classes. This information is also located at the florida school choice website. There is also a website LIGHThomeschool.freewebsites.com, you can ask them about locating a support group near you.
I want to be clear with you, it is the parents reponsibility and right to home school their children, even if you assist.

In my situation, it has been alot easier to home school then to take him to school. My son, does not have behavior issues that requires a one to one, so we socialize in different ways. The JCC has afternoon classes for school aged children, we are also involved in church and he attends a program for children once per week in the evenings as well as Sunday School. It does require an active parent/grandparent. If is ultimately a family decision with involved parents. I feel blessed to have the opportunity, but It is certainly not an easy task. Good luck, please send me a message if your daughter decides so we can talk one on one.

Hi,

Thank so much you for your advise. I am looking at the site LIGHThomeschool.freewebstes.com and FPEA "Starting Point". I have already read law Florida statues in depth and gone to floridaschoolchoice.org. I am familiar with the statues and school choices. I am also well versed with school board regulations and the like as my son, who is 25, went to ESE classes in Miami-Dade when he was younger. It looks like finding a support group or groups would be my next step in order to have some of my questions answered. In particular, do you know if you have to have an educational evaluation done before you start homeschooling or just after the year is over? Tell me, what in particular do you find most difficult in homeschooling. By the way, my grandson will be going to the JCC for summer camp.

Hi...I have a 7 year old who I am homeschooling. I knew my son was different since he was about 2 years old. Since I am a teacher myself, I was able to see how his cognitive development was delayed. But somehow I was hoping to be wrong. I knew he was different but inside of me I wanted to believe it was not true. It is not easy to deal with this situation when it is your own child. I love my son but I am angry for his condition. For me, who have been devoted to education for so many years, it is difficult to accept my son will not learn to the same level as my other children. My son will have to deal with this situation all his life. He will have people make fun of him, and it will be difficult for him to get jobs. What will happen to him when I am no longer around? I decided to homeschool this year after he was given a report card graded according to the "normal" children standards and reflected all "F" grades. He was in first grade. It didn't matter he had an IEP and was receiving resources. He was graded as any other student which I thought was very unfair. The other students in his class did not want to play with him because he didn't know how to read or do math and he was always in trouble. He came to me one morning and said: "...mommy..my friends do not like me because I am always in red..." The teacher in his class controlled the students behavior with a color chart and my son was often in every other but the "good" color which was blue. Now I tell my son that all his days are BLUE DAYS. All his days are special and wonderful. Homeschooling has given me the opportunity to be with him more, spend more quality time and teach him at his own level. I bought a curriculum for him called LIFEPAC. It repeats lessons which is great for reinforcement. I also bought lots of MONTESSORI materials. I am focusing on hands on experiences more than the traditional way of teaching. I wish I met other parents whose children had similar needs so my son can have friends. I take him to the YMCA after school program so he can socialize but it will be great if he had friends who really understood him. Thank you for listening. It is 3am....the only time when its quiet and I can write maybe a little scrambled....
