Hi my son is 6 and I need to get him a tutor to catch up on his academics.
Can anyone recommend a good tutor?
Has anyone gone to Slyvan Learning Center? They sound good. I was thinking of taking him
there.
Thanks

Hi Mari67,

I do not have personal experience with Sylvan, but be careful with places that ask you to pay classes ahead of time. Parent to Parent of miami can send you a list of tutor resources and you can call each and ask about their experience with children with special needs.

Good Luck,

Hi,

My son went to Sylvan as an adult for a short while. It was a little too pricey for us. They use the sylvan method, which they would be happy to tell you about in detail. All you need to do is make an appointment. Sylvan has their own method. They have a system and they stick to it, to the T. the teacher's are there to administer the system, not to teach. The method is done by the guide book. As the child progresses the lessons progress, if the child has difficulty the child is kept at that level until he/she masters it. The tutors work in groups or with one child. The groups cost less and they encourage the children to be in groups, because they benefit from seeing the other children improve. The child's academic placement is determined by academic level not age. In this way it is individualized. My son did well, but the system was too slow for him.Besides, by the time he would have reached his goal, we would have been in the poor house. lol I believe that this may be the case for the children too. It looks as if you have to have good money to lay out, because it takes time. What I did like about the system was that whatever your child learns, it will probably be permanent. This is not a cram course. This is learning for keeps. The system they use insures that the subject matter goes into long term memory and stays there. The system is very methodical and effective. Sylvan takes pride in their system. I have read from forums that the teacher's get a bit frustrated with the system, because it doesn't allow them to individualize the material to the student. The teacher's have a point, too. All in all, it is an individual decision. In terms of the business end of it, plan on reading the contract you sign very carefully and understand your financial commitment to the minute detail. It's better to pay in advance for a specified time. Don't go into debt. You wind up in committing to future classes and interest without even knowing it. And, you have to give a certain amount of advance notice to withdraw from the program. That's all I have to say about Sylvan.

I do know a wonderful, dedicated and very educated accomplished tutor. He has been tutoring forever, his mother before him. He is my son's tutor. His students are mostly children. He has a tutoring center in the North Miami Beach/Aventura area. His rates are reasonable. I can see the children love him and the parents are happy with his work. He has a good personality, is creative, animated, organized and gentle. You may stay with your child, sit in the waiting room, or leave and come back, as you wish. I do hope you live in this area. He would be the one you would like your child to go to the best, I think. Princeton Learning Center is the name. If you have any questions PM me.

Now, I sound like an advertisement, don't I. Lol

Best wishes,

Hi Elona,
Thank you so much for informing me on your experience. That is just what I needed to know.
I'm not sure it is right for my son.
I will try calling him.
Thank you.

Tutoring for students with special needs has to be tailored to their learning profile. Their areas of strengths and weaknesses must be addressed and there should be clear goals and expectations for both the parents and the child. Finally, the tutor should use an evidenced based program that they are familiar with. If you have questions about your child's learning profile or how to assist them, please go to www.learning-profiles.com.
