I live in Baltimore County Maryland and have a second grade child on the Autism spectrum. My husband and I will be relocating to the Miami area this summer, hopefully by June, and we are searching for homes. One of our biggest priorities will be our son's school and special education support. We have been unhappy with our son's progress in the last year or so and our last IEP meeting was a disaster. We really want to do the right thing and move to an area with a great school with folks who are willing to help us and not let our son fall through the cracks. Can anyone recommend the best area/zip code/or any schools in particular that we should try to focus on in our home search? Thank you so much for your replies!

Hi,
We are planning to relocate in miami too this summer from Colorado. I have a son in fourth grade, he is a high-functional autistic. I am trying to find a good school too. Please let me know if you found any schools yet. I checked from greatschools.org and it shows that Coral Gables Elementary is 9 out of 10, but I am not sure if it is great for kids withh learning disablities.

Hello, for those who are planning to relocate to Miami Dade, looking for a good school is a struggle. This county currently has over 38,000 students in special eduaction programs. I suggest that you look at the programs carefully and meet the staff. Ask about services and supports for your child's disability and what training and certification do the teachers have? Children will fall through the cracks here as well if you are not constantly on top of things. Remember that children must attend there home school unless the IEP team decides other wise. You may want to look at the schools in region IV, visit miamidadeschools.net click on school information then click on schools then choose elementary, middle or high school the region appears at the end of the colum usually in roman numerals. Click on the school and it should take you to there website. Coral Gables is a good area and most of the schools are good. You can call Parent to Parent and speak to an Education and Support Specialist for additional support and information.

Well, we moved to Miami one week ago and my son will be attending the Jack Gordon school in Country Walk. I am trying to get his registration done, of course the school will not accept the paperwork/immunization records from his Maryland doctor so I have to hurry and find a new doc just so the Miami school forms can be filled out. The doctor said that I need to deal with the school system for any of his autism related needs. I need to know what to do next. Who do I contact for initial help? And does anyone know anything about the school in particular? It is right up the street from our new house- we can walk to it- and it looks nice in general but I know very little about it other than a couple of reviews I have seen on the internet. thank you so much
