Hello,

My name is Helena. I have a wondeful 2 year old (2 and 8months to be exact) who was diagnosed PDD-NOS mild a couple of months ago. We have been attending the Nova University Program - Starting Right on Mondays and Wednesdays and he has speech therapy on Tuesday/Thursday AM. I would like for him to go to a school/daycare/pre-school on Tuesdays and Thursdays hoping that it would help him with the speech and also socialize. Any suggestions? I am leaning to one close to my house Little College Club, but if there is any other place that anyone would recommend and where they will help I will drive to the other side of Miami.

Thanks in advance,

H

If your son is less than 3 he qualifies for Early STEPS a federally funded program which is free to all children. Your pediatrician can be your referral. When he turns 3, he will qualify for a free speech program after a test at an elementary school in dade or Broward County. They will even send a buss to your house to pick up and drop off your kids. This fall after Bush NoChildLeftBehind act and it is free to all children in Florida. It is a great program. My son was on it and those people have done wonders. I haave spent a lot of time but no $$. Articulation speech problems will disqualify your child so you must tell them about any unusual behaviors your son displays as a result of his/her speech impediment. Yelling, throwing objects, hitting to get attention, ...

Hi, This fall (2011) a new pre-school, "Play & Learn," opens it's doors in Miami on SW 22nd Ave. The school offers innovative and specialized programs to small groups of children that require individualized attention in multiple areas of intervention. Experienced, innovative teachers and paraprofessionals with specialties in the areas of special education, sensory integration, and/or communication offer speech and language, occupational, and music therapy that's integrated into the daily curriculum. They also offer individual therapy sessions that include behavioral management, speech/language, physical, and occupational therapy in our afternoon program. Basically, it's a preschool that would be perfect for children with high functioning autism. The director is a speech pathologist by trade. Check out their website at http://playnlearnprek.com/.
