HELLO MY SON IS 5 YRS OLD AND HAS AUTISM. HE IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING BLUE LAKES ELEMENTARY - I NEED HELP FINDING A SUMMER CAMP FOR HIM. IT IS INCREDIBLE THAT THERE IS SUCH A FEW PLACES AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN LIKE HIM. UNFORTUNATELY I MUST WORK IN ORDER TO PAY FOR HIS THERAPIES SO I CAN NOT STAY HOME WITH HIM FOR THE SUMMER. EITHER THE CAMPS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE OR TOO FAR. MANY OF THE CAMPS HAVE HAD THEIR FUNDS CUT SO I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET HIM INTO CAMP THAT I COULD AFFORD.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU

Have you checked with the programs funded by The Children's Trust www.thechildrenstrust.org - they have an area just for parents and you can check on this link.
and there are other camps listed on the resources page on our website http://www.ptopmiami.org/afterschoolcareandsummercamps.asp

Have you tried looking at the programs funded by the CARD.

Hi,

Here's last years list of camps that I found from The Autism Society Miami-Dade chapter.
My grandson is going to one of these camps this year that's listed. Ironically, I found this list after I enrolled him in camp. I had no idea there were camps out there. Yes, CARD is a very good resource. If you havn't found anything yet. Maybe they can help. Are you registered with CARD, if not, you should have your child registered. They e-mail me all the time with good stuff. And you can talk to them whenever you need something.

Hello,
You can link to the following website for a list of summer camps in our area. You will have to then check each one individually and check out each program. Do contact CARD Center and look at the Children's Trust Website; they are a great resource. Good luck in your search.

HELLO, AS OF TODAY I HAVE FOUND NO PLACE TO TAKE MY SON. I WENT TO VISIT CHILDRENS RESOURCES AND WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST US $14,000.00 FROM JUNE 8 TO AUG 7. WE DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY AND THEY DO NOT ACCEPT VPK AT THIS TIME FOR THE SUMMER. BLUE LAKES WILL NOT BE HAVING A SUMMER CAMP THIS YEAR. HE ATTENDED LAST YEAR AND WAS VERY NICE. I'M WORRIED ABOUT MY SON BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT THERE ARE OTHER PARENTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AS I SINCE THEY TOO HAVE AUTISTIC CHILDREN AND NO PLACE TO PUT THEM.

I WILL APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION THAT CAN HELP ME FIND A CAMP FOR MY SON AT THIS POINT.

THANK YOU

Hi,

Try calling Jennifer S Durocher, PhD She did my grandson's intake for CARD. She is Clinical Assistant Professor and Assistant Director at University of Miami and UM-NSU CARD. 305-2846557 She has been very helpful to me. You can speak to her. You can leave her an e-mail: jstella@miami.edu . You can leave her a phone message and she'll call you back. Sometimes you have to leave more than one message. If she's not available, for example, out of town. Ask if you can speak to someone else that is handling her CARD clients if she's unavailable. If she can't give you information that you can use right away, ask her if she can look into it. She will. Follow up with a calls. CARD is a great resource center. You may have to find someone who babysits children that have Autism that they recommend. You never know. Please let me know what happens or if you have any other questions. I'm no expert, but if we all work together, we can get a good network together.

Good luck,

MICHAELS DAD IS GOING TO CHECK OUT LITTLE BEAM OF LIGHT IN KENDALL TO SEE IF IT WILL BE A GOOD PLACE TO SEND MICHAEL. I AM SO FRUSTRATED WITH THIS. I DONT SEE WHY THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS DONT DO MORE FOR THIS KIDS IN THE SUMMER TIME. THEY LOOSE SO MUCH DURING THE SUMMER IF WE DONT HAVE A GOOD PLACE TO PUT THEM. I WISH I COULD DO MORE NOT ONLY FOR MY SON BUT FOR OTHER PARENTS OUT THERE THAT ARE STRUGGLING WITH THIS SAME ISSUE.

Hi,
Your welcome,
I think you need to call Parent to Parent and find an advocate for you and also help you learn to be an advocate for your son. I know this is overwhelming and extremely frustrating to say the least. My son, who is now 25, was in the Miami-Dade Public school system in ESE from Pre-K to High-school. There are classes and resource material that show you how to work the system legally. An Advocate is important to have, both as a model for you to learn and somebody to provide support and direction at IEP meetings and help you navigate the system. then for next summer it won't be that hard. This is how it works. If on your son's IEP it says that he need year round classes, then even if they say thay don't have a program available, even if they do and it's all filled up, even if the one they has doesn't provide an all day program, they STILL MUST provide a classroom for your son. What this means is they will create a program and it won't, of course be just for your son. This has been done before, many times. People just don't know how to navigate the system. For my son, he needed classes year round because he needed the consistency of behavioral management and also the education so he wouldn't fall behind. His school had to provide and they did. At that time I didn't have to fight for it. It was available in several school in the vicinity. Ususally in his home school, but if there hadn't been I would know what I would have need to do. There are other parents that need the same thing for their children, too. Try to find them in your son's classroom and make sure you tell them what you need and know, and you guys can band together when it's time for early spring IEP meetings. I know this is difficult. Hang on.

THANK YOU. I WILL CONTACT PARENT TO PARENT FOR AN ADVOCATE FOR SURE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST SUMMER THIS HAPPENS TO US. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE I FEEL THAT I SHOULDNT HAVE TO FIGHT SO HARD TO FIND A PLACE THAT IS GOOD AND AFFORDABLE FOR HIM. I CAN NOT PAY THE $14,000 THAT CHILDRENS RESOURCES WANTS. I WISH I COULD BUT THAT IS SO EXPENSIVE FOR SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. TO ME ITS RIDICULOUS. SOMETIMES I WISH I COULD JUST LEAVE MY JOB AND WORK FULLTIME IN OPENING A PLACE JUST FOR THESE KIDS. IT IS SO SO FRUSTRATING. I SEE OTHER PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT FIND A SUMMER CAMP FOR THEIR "NORMAL" KIDS AND ALL I DO IS SIT BACK AND LAUGH BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW.

Hello

I took my son to Greynolds Park , this is in the NE area of Dade County. They were great. If you have internet access this is the web site which has information on the parks which have programs for children with special needs. http://www.thechildrenstrust.org/. You can also go to the park in person and get the brochures.
